highway reconstruction project wins national engineering excellence award

May 8, 2019

The reconstruction of flood-damaged Minnesota Highway 210 won a National Honor Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) Engineering Excellence awards contest. Winners were honored May 7 at a gala held during the ACEC annual convention in Washington, D.C. The ACEC Engineering Excellence National Honor Award identifies and celebrates the top 36 projects completed in the U.S.

Barr served as the lead and geotechnical engineers in the rebuild of the highway and repair of 74 surrounding slopes damaged by massive rain-induced slides in 2012. Barr provided geotechnical investigations of the failed slopes, developed innovative and natural stabilization designs, developed a comprehensive and innovative remote instrumentation and monitoring system, and provided environmental compliance assistance to support construction. The highway re-opened in 2017.

ACEC recognized more than 196 engineering achievements in this year’s competition. Award criteria included originality, technical innovation, and social and economic value, as well as generating excitement for the engineering profession.
