The person selected for this position will work on environmental consulting projects to support a fast-paced client base. Projects will focus on environmental review, permitting, and compliance (water- and waste-focused) for industrial facilities and projects. The position requires strong problem-solving and communication skills to develop solutions to help meet client objectives for water, waste, and other environmental program regulatory requirements. This position also requires critical thinking to assist with regulatory analysis and negotiations. Projects may include:

  • permitting and compliance assistance
  • on-site staffing roles
  • site evaluations and investigations
  • regulatory and technical analyses
  • developing strategic solutions
  • report writing
  • regulatory negotiations

In fulfilling these duties, the position will interface with internal project teams, clients, and agency regulatory staff. The work may require out-of-town assignments in the field, at client facilities, or in another Barr office. Key job activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceptual design and analysis of permitting outcomes
  • Project planning and permitting
  • Evaluation and troubleshooting of new or existing systems
  • Providing regulatory assistance including preparing draft environmental review, NPDES, water appropriation, waste, and other environmental permit applications and related documents
  • Development of compliance monitoring plans
  • Development of stormwater pollution prevention, waste management, spill prevention, and risk management plans
  • Mass balance calculations
  • Participating in stakeholder group discussions

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, high temperature and pressure process equipment, and other conditions typical of large industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required; safety training will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or a related scientific degree
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills including attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Effectiveness in building working relationships and working in multi-disciplinary project teams, including the ability to influence outcomes
  • A flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Self-initiative and motivation with an emphasis on client service and growing a career in environmental consulting
  • Willingness to travel for field work or work at client sites 20-30% of the time or more depending on client needs
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more internships in heavy industries or consulting
  • One to three years of post-college professional experience
  • Experience working with regulations and environmental permitting
  • Project or task management skills
  • Strong leadership skills and experience
  • Aptitude for developing client relationships and business
