Summary

The person in this position will work on multidisciplinary project teams providing geotechnical engineering support for mining industry (specifically oil sands and potash) projects related to infrastructure, landslide and rockfall investigations and remediation, transportation, flood diversion, energy, and research. Work will include understanding client needs and risks, learning how to contract investigation subcontractors, collecting geotechnical field data through in-situ testing or using the observational method, overseeing field investigations, conducting instrumentation installation and monitoring, performing laboratory studies, creating boring logs, and assisting with geotechnical computer modeling. Other tasks may include performing common geotechnical analyses such as those for slope stability, seepage, evaluation of bearing capacity, settlement, and deep foundations as well as preparing plans and specifications, writing reports, and estimating project costs. Fieldwork for the position will include construction observation and assistance with management of project scope, schedule, and budget. The position will require working with geotechnical engineers in other Barr offices as well as our clients.

This position will require work assignments throughout Canada and the U.S.

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided before being expected to work on these sites. Must be able to safely lift and carry 22.7 kg.


Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in an engineering field with a geotechnical engineering emphasis from an accredited institution
  • Zero years of relevant work experience with traditional geotechnical engineering
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design work
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule to meet project deadlines and client needs
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, especially Word and Excel
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain a P.Eng. after completing required engineering work experience
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada and the United States without the need for sponsorship or ability to obtain a TN work permit
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering
  • Three plus years of relevant work experience with traditional geotechnical engineering
  • Experience with CADD-based programs (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microstation)
  • Proven capability to take research-level work and implement practical applications
  • Experience in the oil sands or potash industries in Canada
  • Well-developed project and task management skills
  • Work experience with geotechnical analysis and computer modeling or other related software (FLAC, Plaxis, Geo-Studio, Soil Vision, Slide, LPile, APile)
  • Field experience with cone-penetration testing, standard penetration testing, and other in-situ methods
  • Laboratory experience with strength and compressibility testing of clay and silt-size materials using a triaxial or ring-shear test apparatus
