Interested in working on challenging engineering projects at power, mining, and transportation-related sites across North America? In this position, you’ll work with engineering teams on geotechnical engineering designs and assist with field coordination of investigation activities, construction observation, and problem-solving.

Project responsibilities include working on multi-discipline project teams to complete geotechnical soil and rock investigations and in-situ testing, for which you will: assist with observing the completion of soil borings, rock cores, and test excavations; classify soil (USCS) and bedrock samples and prepare drilling logs; observe and document construction activities by contractors; complete daily field observation logs; and inform the project team of progress on construction sites. Field work involves traveling to project sites.

In the office, you’ll track projects, assist engineering teams with field activities reporting, summarize and analyze data and investigations, assist with geotechnical engineering analyses and report preparation; and complete geotechnical designs under the supervision of experienced engineers. Communication skills are important as are attention to detail, an aptitude for learning on the fly, and a demonstrated willingness to be responsible and timely and to meet project commitments.

You may work on projects involving traditional geotechnical engineering analysis and design related to shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, earth retention, and dams. The work will include performing geotechnical computer modeling; specifying and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing; overseeing on-site and in-laboratory material testing; and installing geotechnical and structural instrumentation. Projects will focus on geotechnical design and analysis and will include preparing plans and specifications (including CADD work), writing reports, and estimating costs. This role also involves field work such as construction observation; subsurface investigations; in-situ testing; surveying; materials testing; facility inspections; and managing selected project tasks for scope, schedule, and budget compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis from an ABET accredited university (two or more classes in geotechnical curriculum)
  • Two years of relevant work experience through co-ops and traditional geotechnical engineering consulting
  • Strong technical skills and training and work experience in the field such as construction observation; subsurface investigations; in-situ testing; and construction materials testing
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel to projects throughout North America (50% average for first three years)
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet development
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering with additional coursework in structural engineering or rock mechanics
  • 3+ years of geotechnical experience through previous geotechnical engineering consulting
  • Project or task management skills
  • Ability to develop or foster ongoing relationships with clients
  • Work experience with geotechnical analysis and geotechnical computer modeling or other related software (FLAC, Plaxis, and/or Geo-studio)
  • Training or work experience in rock engineering
  • Interest in renewable power, mining, power, and fuels industries

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and must be able to enter and work in facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided before work is assigned on these sites. Drug screening will be required depending on the client safety protocols.
