Barr is seeking an engineer to join its growing Calgary office. This person will work with multidisciplinary teams providing field support and engineering analysis and design for industrial clients in the oil sands and the mining industries. Project work may include coordinating technical programs for large-scale field pilot tests; overseeing on-site and bench-scale material testing; providing on-site construction observation; conducting onsite investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, and groundwater; evaluating and interpreting laboratory data; assisting with geotechnical and environmental designs; estimating costs; preparing plans and specifications; writing technical reports; and performing other duties as assigned by the company. While the position is located in Calgary, it routinely will require travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, geological, or chemical engineering with an interest in tailings and mine reclamation
  • 5 or more years of work experience directly related to the job responsibilities described above
  • Professionally certified in Alberta (e.g., P. Eng.) or ability to obtain certification within one year
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated project organization and leadership skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
  • Strong computer skills, including word processing and complex spreadsheets
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs (up to 25% field work and travel expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time)
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada and the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in civil, environmental, geological, or chemical engineering
  • Knowledge and experience in remediation and tailings management issues within the oil sands industry
  • Knowledge and understanding of industrial manufacturing processes such as petroleum refining, mining, and/or minerals processing
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in remote locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction and mining sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste-disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites.
