Barr Engineering Company is seeking an environmental scientist/ecologist to join its Ann Arbor office and undertake challenging and fast-paced work on, environmental impact assessment, permitting, and compliance projects. Work may include conducting environmental reviews; performing natural resource surveys; conducting wetland and waterbody delineations, inventories, and functional assessments; participating in other field studies; performing desktop and field threatened and endangered species reviews; conducting soil erosion inspections; developing field reports and environmental permit applications; and communicating with regulatory agencies and client contacts to verify environmental compliance. The environmental scientist/ecologist will work with other Barr staff members, regulatory agency personnel, clients, and subcontractors. The work may at times involve short-term, out-of-town assignments either in the field or in another office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS or BA degree in plant or wildlife ecology, biology, botany, natural resources management, environmental science/studies/policy, or a related field
  • Experience with and ability to participate in field studies and field data collection efforts
  • Superior writing and communication skills
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Exceptional task management skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and follow-up
  • Attention to detail
  • Computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, Google Earth, etc.)
  • Ability to coordinate with local, state, and federal regulators
  • Legal authorization to work in the country without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related area or specialized experience in the fields of ecology or natural resources management
  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Proficiency with GIS tools
  • Environmental consulting or regulatory agency work experience
  • Wisconsin DNR-certified to complete Natural Heritage Inventory environmental reviews
  • Michigan Wetlands Association certification in wetland delineation
  • Experience with the following:
  • Wetland determinations and delineations, wetland restoration design and construction, and restoration contracting and management
  • State and federal environmental regulations, permitting processes (including EAW and EIS), and/or field compliance for utility corridor projects
  • State and federal threatened and endangered species programs
  • Soil erosion and sedimentation control planning and inspections, construction storm water plans, and site restoration planning

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste-disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided.
