Summary

The person selected for this position will work on geotechnical engineering projects for dams and levees involving geotechnical analysis and design related to slope stability, seepage, earth retention, shallow and deep foundations, bearing capacity, and settlement. The work includes specifying and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing; overseeing on-site and in-laboratory material testing; installing instrumentation; and performing geotechnical computer modeling. Project work also involves preparing plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates. In addition, this role includes business development, project management, mentoring and coaching, project planning and scheduling, workload estimating, and management of project tasks for adherence to scope, schedule, and budget. The position also entails fieldwork such as construction observation, subsurface investigations, and facility inspections. It requires periodic out-of-town assignments.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis
  • Five years of relevant work experience with traditional geotechnical engineering
  • Strong geotechnical analysis and design skills
  • Professional engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Proven experience collaborating and maintaining relationships across offices
  • Willingness to travel to support project needs
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet creation
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Geotechnical computer-modeling capabilities
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to water or tailings storage facilities, dam engineering, and/or advanced soil mechanics
  • At least eight years of geotechnical design experience, including overseeing drilling at dam and levee projects
  • Training or work experience in engineering of hydroelectric dams and/or levee systems, and familiarity with guidelines from USACE, FERC, BLM and/or FEMA
  • Training or experience with fieldwork such as construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, instrumentation installation, surveying, materials testing, and facility inspections
  • Task-management skills
  • Computer skills with gINT, AutoCAD, and/or statistical analysis software
  • Work experience with geotechnical analysis and geotechnical computer modeling or other related software (FLAC, Plaxis, Midas GTS NX, SoilVision, and/or GeoStudio)


NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
