With creative thinking, options abound
Each year, private industries and public entities spend hundreds of millions of dollars on dredging and disposing sediment to remediate legacy contamination. The good news: in many cases, with creative thinking and environmental planning, this “waste” sediment can become a valuable resource.

A former slip that once served the Great Lakes shipping industry was restored to a natural state as part of a larger contaminated sediment remediation project near Duluth, Minnesota. Aquatic restoration projects often pose the challenge of what to do with contaminated dredged sediment. At this site, sediment was placed and capped at varying depths to restore aquatic habitat.
